EPiServer CMS 7 Content Blocks

Guy MacArthur Team : Web Development

One of the great new features in EPiServer CMS 7 are content blocks.

Content blocks are sets of properties, or content in their own right, that are hosted on pages.  They’re not meant to render on the site on their own, like a content page, so they are presented on a page or shared across many pages.

Being content, they still benefit from versioning, access restriction and, for shared blocks, they are navigated and organized in their own content tree using content folders.

For content editors, managing them is simple.  Blocks that are created for a single page are edited as a set of properties on a page.  Shared blocks are managed on their own, and drag and dropped onto content areas of pages across your site(s).  Whenever shared blocks are edited, the changes are maintained across all the pages that block is hosted on (once published), as well as when in preview and inline editing modes.

Some other modern CMS’s and older versions of EPiServer can be made to support similar functionality using just content pages, but it’s nice to finally have a well thought out and implemented tool for the job.
