Getting creative

One of the worst feelings for a Creative is getting stuck on ideas, even worse is trying to create yourself out of them; which never works. I’m actually stuck right now trying to write this blog.

So what do you do to get the brain moving? Below are a few exercises that help get you going when the going gets stuck.

1. The Incomplete figure. This exercise was developed in 1960’s by psychologist Ellis Paul Torrance. This was a creativity oriented alternative to an IQ test. The idea is to take a shape like the below and try and complete the picture.

a. The incomplete image

b. The completed images

2. Alternative Uses. Developed by J.P. Guildford in 1967, this creative thinking test gets users to think of as many uses as possible for an everyday object like a chair, coffee mug or brick. Below is a sample for a brick:

1. Build a wall
2. Build a desk
3. Use it as a projectile weapon
4. Paperweight
5. Use it as weights
6. Anchor
7. Feet warmer, put it in the oven
8. A seat

3. And this final one, I think it’s ever-ones fav. Take a holiday.Below is a video of Stefan Sagmeister, every 7 years Stefan closes his New York Studio for a year long sabbatical to rejuvenate.
