The Internet of Things (IoT) has been around since the 1990s. If you don't know, IoT is the wireless connectivity of everyday objects that have been "smart" enabled with a bit of electronics. In recent years its been picking up alot of steam, due to the advances in wireless and microchip techonologies. Smart enabled devices are popping up everywhere and we interact with more of them than we think.

There are bins that report if they are full or empty, and the last time they've been emptied. Toilets can sample our waste and alert us of potential health issues. Your white goods could be generating a shopping list for you automatically. All these devices will be generating data everyday. This means data mining and warehousing companies like Google, Apple, IBM, Amazon will have just that much more information for their targeted ads, and product personalisation. Retailers are implementing IoT in their stores to manage their inventory in real-time, changing price tags remotely, provide customers with real-time delivery information, tracking their packages and their locations throug the Internet. Manufacturers are internet enabling their assembly lines and manufacturing processes to allow customers to build personalised goods.
