Meeting the real Wiliam
We get asked a bit about where our name comes from and the answer is a blue, Egyptian, faience sculpture of a blue hippopotamus housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Here he is:
The hippo is called ‘William’ (note the two Ls, rather than our name that has only one L) and he is the mascot of the museum.
It’s a longer story to explain why we are named after a hippo or why we dropped an L, though that is for another day.
From time to time, we post photos of Wiliam around the world; our staff wearing a Wiliam t-shirt or hat or a replica of Wiliam showing up on the way to the UK or lounging in Egypt.
Anyway, one of our finest Web Producers, Kathleen has just returned from three weeks in Italy and the US and… she met the original William.
