Wiliam does the Hamburger

Natalie Ashes Team : Web Production

I have read numerous blogs on how effective the hamburger menu is. Do users really know what it is? And do they click it? We decided to challenge a test on exisweb and here are our results.

Our experiment went for 3 months and was only on mobile. We tested three versions of the hamburger:

Original

Burger + border

No Burger + text

Burger + Border + Text

We used Optimizely and sent traffic evenly to all 4 variations.

The results?

The results are below but the winner is burger + border + text. This had an increase in clicks by 26.5%!

Why?

We can't assume that people understand icons and what they mean. We need to spell it out for them. The use of icons makes text easier to digest however they don't mean much if you don't know what it stands for.

Let this be a lesson to us technical people that assume users know everything we do.
